Types of Men’s Coats (6) “P Coats

The “P coat (pea coat)” made of thick wool melton fabric was adopted as the uniform for the Royal Navy at the end of the 19th century and was widely worn among fishermen in Brittany, France. The origin of the “P” in “P” coat is variously attributed to “Pij Jekker,” a Dutch winter jacket made of coarse woolen fabric woven in the 18th century, or to “P,” a pilot’s jacket, according to a theory that it was derived from the reefer coat worn by cadets in the British Royal Navy. Design features include “short double-breasted,” “wide Ulster collar,” “buttons with an anchor mark, a remnant of the Royal Navy,” and “handwarmer pockets called muff pockets. Recently, various brands have come out with P coats in various silhouettes, such as oversized, drop-shoulder, and long-length.
