Sports or Military? What are the two different origins of the blazer?
The blazer, characterized by its metal shank buttons, is said to have originated from different types of single and double blazers. Generally, the single type blazer is called a “sport jacket” and originated from flannel jackets worn as uniforms for college sports such as cricket, tennis, and boat racing, while the double type blazer is said to have originated from the Royal Navy’s frock coat, which was shortened in length for ease of movement. The double blazer is thought to have originated from the ” reefer jacket,” a uniform for cadets (reefers) that was made shorter than the frock coat of the Royal Navy to allow for ease of movement.
