Types of patterned jackets (4) “Tartan check” has a history of being treated as a pattern that only Scottish clans were allowed to use at that time.
Tartan check is a plaid pattern made of multi-colored yarns woven in a twill weave representative of Scotland, England. In Japan, it is called tartan check, but overseas, tartan is more common. It is a traditional woolen fabric originating from Scotland. There are various theories as to the origin of the name, with the most popular theory being that the word “tartan” came about due to confusion between “tiretaine,” meaning a fabric from the Northern Highlands of Scotland, and “breacan,” meaning a plaid patterned fabric. Originally, only Scottish clans were allowed to use tartan, and each clan had its own unique pattern, which is thought to have had a meaning similar to that of a family crest in Japan. Tartan is strictly defined by the Scottish Tartan Registry as “wool in twill weave,” “a plaid pattern using two or more colors of yarn, interlaced at right angles,” and “the same color and number of threads used in the warp and weft. Today, tartan plaid motifs other than those officially registered are also common throughout the world.
