What is the famous "DW-5900" that determined the value of G-Shock?

The “5900 Series” that made G-SHOCK a national brand

G-Shock made a spectacular debut as the one and only G-Shock and shocked the industry when it was released, but it was only talked about a little in the market, and its popularity remained stagnant for nearly 10 years, when the square-case “5000 series” derivative models continued to be released. The DW-5900C, a well-known model to fans of the past, is the originator of what is commonly called the “three-eyed” G-Shock model.

Released overseas in 1990, right in the middle of Japan’s bubble economy, the “DW-5900C” was a big hit, especially among skaters on the West Coast of the United States. In Japan, trendy fashions such as “kirekaje,” which mainly consisted of navy blue blazers and chinos, and “shibu-kaje,” which consisted of riders’ jackets and engineer boots, were also popular. Skater fashion became a major force. The “DW-5900C” became a can’t-miss item for domestic trendsetters such as business people and musicians, who reimported it and wore it one after another, attracting attention in magazines and on TV.

In 1992, G-Shock began selling the watch in Japan, and the number of shipments in Japan, which had been approximately 30,000 units for the entire brand until the previous year, quickly grew to more than 150,000 units, making it a national brand, thanks in part to the popularity of this model.
