The name “Cardigan” originated from the name of an English Earl!

The name “cardigan” comes from James Brudenell, the 7th Earl of Cardigan, commander of a brigade of light cavalry in the British Army, who was famous for his reckless charge at the Battle of Balaclava in the Crimean War. It is said to have originated from a remake of a V-neck sweater that was worn as a layering garment to keep warm and could be opened in the front and fastened with buttons so that wounded soldiers could easily put it on and take it off during the war. Incidentally, this garment officially began to be called a cardigan in 1868, when the Earl of Cardigan was lost.

According to one theory, the cardigan was not worn by the Earl of Cardigan, but was inspired by the design of a gilet (vest) with a front opening. The prototype of the cardigan is said to be the ” Aran sweater ” worn by English fishermen 500 years ago, and is one of the traditional items with a rich history.
