Chino pants are immensely popular along with jeans as a staple of casual pants. In particular, khaki-colored chinos, the world’s first field pants “M-41” completed in 1941 and commonly known as “41 (Yonichi) Khaki,” are considered to be the original military pants, and have become the standard for bottoms that produce a masculine look. Originally, khaki meant a beige color like dust or sand, but not only in Japan but also in English-speaking countries, the definition of khaki has been confused, and in men’s fashion, there is a noticeable tendency to generally refer to smoky olive green as khaki. Khaki” means “dust. Nowadays, it is also used as a generic term for colonial/military colors.

The word “khaki” means “dust” in English, and is said to have originated in the mid-19th century when British troops stationed in colonial India used soil to dye their white summer clothes to make them less dirty. Because of this origin, khaki has a strong military image and is often used as a synonym for the military. The image of the military uniform color has spread around the world, and today, olive green in U.S. military uniforms designed for activities in forested areas and ash green used in European countries are also called khaki.

Since many of the colorings used in military uniforms are earth colors that blend in with nature, today, khaki is generally recognized as an earth color and a colonial/military color with a wide range of coverage. In the apparel industry, military fashion = olive green, and olive green pants are often referred to as khaki pants.
