What is Seersucker?
Seersucker, also known as ” soccer ” or ” shijira-ori ” in Japan, is a standard fabric for summer. The word “sheer” means “thin and transparent” in Persian. It is also said to be derived from shīr va shakkar, meaning milk and sugar. The warp threads are woven in alternating taut and slack sections at regular intervals, and the uneven wavy shimmer created in the process creates a three-dimensional effect and at the same time reduces the surface area of the fabric on the skin, giving it a cool, refreshing feel. Since the material alternately wrinkles, it is often used in combination with stripes and check patterns to accentuate the wrinkled appearance. Nowadays, seersucker fabrics are sometimes woven by combining yarns with different chemical treatments and shrinkage levels. Originally, soft flax fabric from India was commonly used, but cotton is now the mainstream. Seersucker fabrics made from synthetic fibers and other materials also exist.
The unique “wrinkle” of seersucker makes summer outfits look fresh!
The most distinctive feature of seersucker is its “shijira. Although the wrinkles are a characteristic of this material, it creates a fresh impression when incorporated into styling. Also, since the wrinkles are inherent to the material, there is no need to iron out the wrinkles after washing. In general, cotton is the main material used in many cases, so it dries quickly and feels smooth and fresh to the touch. The disadvantages include color fading and shrinkage due to washing. Since this is an item that must be used heavily during the coming summer season, it is advisable to follow the precautions written on the product tag when washing it and take appropriate care of it in order to prolong its life.
