The name “Sukajan” originated in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, which is famous for its U.S. Navy base, and the name “Yokosuka jumper” became “Sukajan. In other words, Sukajan is a Japanese outerwear. Therefore, Japanese and oriental motifs such as dragons, tigers, eagles, and Mount Fuji are used in embroidery designs. Originally, the Sukajan was a souvenir item created for American soldiers in the immediate postwar period, and in the U.S. it is known as a “souvenir jacket. At the time, American soldiers liked to bring back kimonos, obis, and other traditional Japanese crafts as souvenirs, and taking a hint from their tastes, the Sukajan began with a base design of a baseball jacket that was familiar to Americans and embroidered with Japanese-style embroidery.

It spread from baseball teams to universities and high schools, where it came to be used as cheerleading wear by fans as well. It is also unique to stadium jackets to be decorated with team logos, school names, and other patches and embroidery, thereby showing which team or school one is cheering for. The term “stadium jacket” is a Japanese word, and the common English names for it are varsity jacket, award jacket, and letterman’s jacket.
