The fine striped tie favored by the French is acceptable for formal occasions.

Even in Europe and the United States, stripes are often confused with regimental stripes, but a regimental stripe is a stripe that is wide enough to identify which regiment it belongs to even from a distance. Fine stripes with minimal color difference are often used in French suit styles, and are considered acceptable for formal wear. However, the definition of what constitutes a regimental stripe and what constitutes a fine stripe is not clear, and many gentlemen avoid the use of stripes on formal occasions.
