Like the Tylocken coat, the Ulster Coat is said to be the prototype of the trench coat. The coat is said to have been named after a coat made of Donegal tweed (Donegal tweed) from Ulster in the northwest of Ireland, and its features include “Ulster collar with equal or slightly wider upper and lower collars,” “long length and double-breasted,” “patch and flap pockets,” and “back belt with removable buttons. The Ulster overcoat of the 1880s had a detachable cape or hood, and there are many references to the coat worn by Sherlock Holmes in novel illustrations and movies as an Ulster coat.

Originally made as a travel cloak, the Ulster coat is an outer garment that combines classicism and utility, and can be worn in a variety of ways, from dress to casual.
