Men's Swimwear 6 Rules of Fashion

Except for countries with everlasting summer, the season for wearing swimsuits is limited, and many men may say, “I know how to dress stylishly in clothes, but I don’t know much about swimsuits…”. I’m sure there are many men who know how to dress stylishly in clothes, but are not so sure about swimsuits…”? In this issue, we will introduce the latest trends and tips on how to look stylish in men’s swimsuits.

(1) The basic rule is to choose a swimsuit length that is neither too short nor too long, but above the knee.

The trend for shorts in the fashion scene has been to lengthen the length of shorts, and jorts are also on the rise, but the situation is a little different when it comes to swimwear. This summer, we recommend above-the-knee lengths that do not expose too much of the thighs. Fashion brands that offer swimwear, as well as surf brands, also offer shorts that are quite short, so if you like that kind of design, of course you can choose it, but we recommend a length just like the one in the image below.

While luxury brands and influencers are largely responsible for clothing trends, we believe that surf culture and the surfing industry are influencing trends, especially when it comes to casual swimwear worn at the beach or pool. In the surfing scene, there is a bit of a retro boom, with the popularity of twin-fin surfboards that were popular in the 70s and 80s, and shorter lengths are still the norm for swimwear. However, shorts that completely expose the thighs are too much for people who are not surfers or people who really like that kind of swimwear.

(2) Unwanted hair must be removed.

In a swimsuit style that exposes skin, hair removal is a must. Men’s sense of beauty has improved tremendously in the past few years, and it has become the norm for them to have their unwanted hair trimmed, so if you go out to swimsuit spots with untreated hair, you may be shocked at the difference between you and those around you, and you may not be able to enjoy the experience. While a tanned skin will not be so much of a problem, untreated hair on white skin will be even more unpopular than in the past. If you are not comfortable with laser hair removal or Brazilian waxing, or do not want to spend the time or money, we recommend using a body shaver to trim the length. The areas that must be treated are armpit hair, leg hair, and chest hair. Incidentally, the following Panasonic products are also compatible with underarm hair.

For Caucasians, whose skin is white and hair pigmentation is light, and for blacks, whose skin is darker and hair pigmentation is darker, the contrast between skin and hair is so small that leaving it raw is not noticeable on the outside. This is one of the reasons why untreated leg and arm hair is common in Europe and the United States, even though underarm hair is generally treated. On the other hand, many East Asians have fair skin and darker pigmentation, so their unwanted hair is very noticeable. Men with a clear contrast between skin and hair should definitely have their hair treated.

Rule (3): Obesity is out of the question. Work out the prominent muscles of the upper body.

In men’s swimsuit styles, where the majority of the body is exposed, body shape is important because it is not deceptive to say at all. Fat around the abdomen is out of the question. In particular, the prominent muscles of the upper body should be trained. The muscles of the chest, shoulders, arms, and abdomen stand out at a quick glance and should be intensively trained. It is even more ◎ if the back muscles can also be trained to give the body thickness.

When one thinks of a swimsuit-worthy body type, physique comes to mind. In recent years, many of the top-ranked men in physique competitions have also trained their legs well, so it is ideal to do some leg training as well, but in terms of general appearance, the upper body still has the highest priority. On the other hand, hypertrophy of leg muscles produces the effect of increased basal metabolism, so it is a great idea to do leg training with the aim of losing weight. Rule (4): Avoid wearing a rash guard for fashionable purposes!

Rush guards are items deployed for people who enjoy ocean leisure activities to prevent abrasions and sunburns, and many people may have an image of surfers wearing them. However, in fact, it is really rare to see surfers, especially male surfers, wearing them. This is probably due to the fact that rash guards lack thickness, are unreliable in terms of heat retention and injury prevention, and have few advantages. Some people say that they wear them to hide their body shape, but since rash guards stick to the body when wet and show the lines of the body, this kind of effect is almost impossible to achieve. Even if it lacks functionality, a stylish image would be nice, but there is nothing special about that either. Unless you have a purpose such as to hide tattoos, or have weak skin and really want to prevent sunburn on the upper body, it may be a bad idea to wear it.

The rash guard is a very strange item that surfers almost never wear, even though it is generally associated with surf goods. They wear it only as a number when they participate in competitions. Surfers generally enjoy summer surfing by wearing a wetsuit (tapper), a T-shirt, or a tank top. In my opinion, it is not necessary to wear a tapper unless you are extremely sensitive to the sun or a child.

Rule (5): Use matte wax to set your hair and keep it in place even near the water.

When actively spending time in environments such as beaches and pools, where you are exposed to water and wind, combined with perspiration, hairstyles can easily become disheveled. In such environments, we recommend styling products with a hard texture, such as so-called matte waxes and clay waxes. In general, these waxes are not glossy, are not stretchy, and are somewhat difficult to handle, but they have the advantage of excellent holding power and are water-resistant. Even if you normally shy away from this type of wax, consider it for your swimsuit style.

The product above is AXE BLACK Mud Wax, which is designed to be resistant to moisture and rain. I actually used it when I went surfing and it holds up pretty well. When I first styled it, the texture seemed a little too hairy for me, but it was just right after I got out of the water. The matte texture characteristic of so-called clay waxes seems to blend in with exposure to water. Personally, I don’t usually use matte wax, so it is positioned as a wax that can be used for the ocean and is just right for summer leisure activities.
