What is a dark suit?
As the name suggests, a dark suit is “a suit tailored in dark fabrics such as dark blue, charcoal gray, or black. It is also used as a synonym for business suits. Incidentally, “dark suit” originally means “abbreviated formal wear,” a phrase used mainly in Western countries.
I am a guest at a wedding reception. Is a dark suit appropriate?
Historically, formal attire such as a morning or evening dress coat and “semi-formal attire” such as a tuxedo or director’s suit have been considered legitimate. Family members and guests of honor who are close blood relatives of the bride and groom are encouraged to wear the above attire. However, if you are attending as a friend or colleague of the bride or groom, you may be perceived as overdone or out of place. In most cases, it is customary to attend wedding receptions in the dark suit style, which is a more informal form of formal attire.
What shade of dark suit should I wear as a guest at the wedding reception?
Ideally, a black suit, a darker color such as charcoal gray or midnight blue, and basically a solid color suit should be chosen. Patterns such as micro herringbone or bird’s eye that look plain from a distance are acceptable. As for hems, single hems are preferable to double hems.
Odd vests are a great way to add flair to a dark suit style.
A three-piece suit with a vest made of the same fabric as the suit is of course a good choice, especially if the vest is lighter in color than the dark suit, as it will add a festive touch. Odd vests in gray colors are easy to match.
