Parker’s long-selling ballpoint pen ” JOTTER

The prototype of the ballpoint pen was born in 1884. It was conceived by an American, John Loud, but was never put into practical use because it could not prevent ink leakage. In 1938, a Jewish-Hungarian journalist, Bielo László, invented the world’s first modern ballpoint pen and patented it in the U.K. Mass production began in 1945, and the ballpoint pen boomed in the U.S. during the postwar period. The ballpoint pen market expanded rapidly. In response, Parker, which had been successful with fountain pens, considered entering the ballpoint pen market. However, ballpoint pens at that time were not yet completely leak-proof. Parker’s passion to create a highly reliable pen led him to conduct thorough research over a period of about 10 years until he arrived at the ideal refill. In 1954, Parker’s first ballpoint pen, the ” Jotter ” was born.

The Jotter revolutionized the development of ballpoint pens with its large refill and rotor mechanism

The Jotter was the world’s first high-performance ballpoint pen with a large capacity refill, and boasted a writing distance approximately five times greater than that of previous ballpoint pens. The Jotter was also the first pen to feature a mechanism that rotates the refill one-quarter turn when the user knocks on the pen. This mechanism prolonged the life of the pen’s ball nib and prevented the ink from running out. The nylon body and stainless steel cap also made the pen more durable, and the use of neutral ink reduced nib corrosion, making it unique. Thanks to these innovative mechanisms, the Jotter sold 3.5 million units in its first year on the market. It became one of the most iconic ballpoint pens in the world.

Parker’s Jotter is the ballpoint pen used by James Bond in 007

The Jotter is also famous for being used in the 007 movie “GoldenEye,” one of the most popular movies in the series, and was featured in the second half of the film, which was also the first movie for the fifth James Bond, Pierce Brosnan. It has been modified so that three knocks detonate the pen after four seconds, and another three knocks disarm it. The scene in which one of the enemies knocks the jotter taken from Bond and uses the explosion to escape from a pinch is one of the highlights of the story. There are many high-end writing instruments, but this is the only ballpoint pen that James Bond has ever used.
