Why “Mexican”? Tracing its roots
Why is it called “Mexican Parka” when it originated in the United States? The history of the Mexican parka is surprisingly old, dating back to the 1930s. Surfers who traveled south from the U.S. in search of waves arrived in Baja California, Mexico, and fell in love at first sight with a garment made of a traditional Mexican fabric called “serapi blanket. In the 1960s, the brand became popular as an icon of hippie culture and antisocial counterculture. Later, when “Stussy” worked on it, it became a focus of attention in the street scene. With the recent resurgence in popularity of street fashion, Mexican parkas have appeared from high brands, and many items that can be easily incorporated into daily coordination have been developed as the hippie color has waned.
