Dr. Martens” started with the birth of a revolutionary sole developed by a doctor
In 1945, Dr. Klaus Martens, a German doctor engaged in military service, was injured while skiing on leave. He felt that the boots provided by the army were too much for his injured foot, so he developed his own “Air Cushion Sole,” a sole with a bouncy feel. This is the beginning of the sole used for “Dr. Martens” now. The air cushion sole caught the eye of the Griggs family, a long-established shoe manufacturer in the U.K., and a partnership was formed, resulting in the birth of the first model, an 8-hole boot named ” 1460,” on April 1, 1960. Starting with this model, various models were introduced and worn by factory workers and postmen in the U.K. because of their comfort. The brand established its position as a work shoe brand.
Later, they were favored by cultural groups derived from workers such as the “Skins” and “Mods,” and spread enormously to the music scene, with Pete Townsend of THE WHO at the forefront. The fashionable shoes have been closely associated with music from this point on. From there, they spread to the fashion scene, which has a close relationship with music, and have evolved into an indispensable standard item of fashion.
