The British shoe brand “Dr. Martens” was founded in 1945 by Klaus Martens, a doctor in the German army during World War II, who developed an air-cushioned sole with the help of Herbert Hunk, an old friend from his college days who had a knowledge of mechanical engineering. After injuring his ankle while skiing in 1945, Martens found that the military boots he had been issued by the army were too hard for his injured foot, so he decided to create a sole that would soften the impact of walking and prevent foot fatigue. With postwar supplies in short supply, Martens and Hunk managed to procure scrap wood and leather to develop the world’s first air-cushioned sole made of tire rubber and filled with air, and this was a major step toward the birth of Dr. Martens. Two years later, in 1947, the company began selling shoes equipped with the innovative air-cushioned sole. These shoes were a big hit with working-class men and housewives, and with an eye on a larger market, the two men eventually transferred the manufacturing rights to the British company R. Grix. In 1960, the first model in the U.K., the “1460” 8-hole boot, was born.
