Church’s was founded in 1873. It is a long-established shoe brand with a particularly long history in the United Kingdom, which has a long shoe culture with a history of about 150 years. In the 1870s, when bespoke shoes were the norm, ready-made shoes and military shoes for soldiers were considered low-priced versions of bespoke shoes, and at that time, the same last (wooden pattern) was used for both right and left shoes, as there was no attention paid to the difference between left and right feet and the skeletal structure. It is said that Church, who was involved in the production of military shoes for the British army at the time, was the first to create the “adaptable” design technique (there are various theories), which utilizes a different wooden last for left and right shoes. It is also said that Church created half-size shoes in 0.5cm increments, and it would not be an exaggeration to say that it was Church who created the prototype for today’s ready-to-wear shoes.
