FilMelange has collaborated with “LITMUS,” a group of indigo dyeing craftsmen who have inherited traditional techniques, to create a new line of items. An event commemorating this collaboration will be held at the HouseFilMelange Jingumae store from July 14 (Sat)!

The one and only item created by the indigo-dyeing artisan group “LITMUS

Litmus is a group of indigo dyeing craftsmen active in Kugenuma, Shonan. They make and dye indigo solution using the traditional method of “lye fermentation construction,” which was practiced mainly during the Edo period (1603-1868). Although there are still products using the word “aizome” today, there are only a few products in Japan that are actually dyed using the traditional method. Litmus’ indigo, made with only natural ingredients and without the use of any chemicals, is a dyeing method that is gentle on the body, the environment, and the appearance.

In addition to four types of T-shirts, this collaboration includes two sweatshirts, a knit hat, and a bandana. The artisan’s skill and immeasurable labor involved in soaking and squeezing a single piece, soaking and squeezing, exposing it to air, soaking and squeezing again, and so on are the key factors in the creation of these items. The products, which are dyed through a tremendous process over a long period of time, have wonderful colors that cannot be described in words. The colors produced by hand are never the same, and the unique charm of indigo dyeing is that you can find your own unique color. During the event, “shaved ice,” a typical summer treat, will also be available.
