A new watch that inherits and evolves the two milestone models of Seiko Divers, interpreted in a modern way
Seiko Prospex has released the 1965 Mechanical Divers, the first model of its kind to be launched in Japan in 1965, and the 1970 Mechanical Divers, launched five years later, two models that have played important milestones in the history of Seiko and Japanese watchmaking. The design of the watch itself is basically the same as that of the archives. While the design of the watch itself basically follows the archives, a fabric strap is used for the first time in the history of Seiko Divers.
Reinterpretation of the first Japanese diver’s watch
Seiko’s diver’s watches were created in 1965 as the first Japanese-made diver’s watches. Since then, the company has released a series of products equipped with its unique technology, and has earned a high reputation and trust from divers and adventurers around the world. The two new models presented here are modern interpretations of the mechanical divers’ watches introduced in 1965 and 1970. 1965 Mechanical Divers was used in the harsh environment of the Antarctic in the 1960s, and its reliability was confirmed. It can be said to be the starting point for the development of Seiko’s special watches, which also led to the development of adventure watches and pilot’s watches.
The first Seiko diver’s watch launched in 1970 was a diver’s watch with a distinctive streamlined form. The adventurer Naomi Uemura carried this watch on his 12,000 km dog sledding trip in the Arctic Circle from 1974 to 1976. It has proven to be highly reliable in harsh environments.
