The polo shirt in its current form was invented and popularized by René Lacoste, a French tennis player and founder of the apparel brand Lacoste. One of the French Four Musketeers in tennis and a seven-time Grand Slam champion, he suddenly retired in 1929 at the young age of 25. The cause was tuberculosis.
