Focus on what makes a mod coat unique! Focus on functional details of military origin!
Since the mod coat has now become a fashion item, the classic details of its origins are often omitted. Here are some of the traditional/characteristic details of mod coats that you should understand in order to choose a mod coat that you are satisfied with!

It features a thin, plain weave cotton nylon fabric in an olive green color scheme. Products in thicker cotton satin fabric can also be seen, but from the 1951 specifications, it appears that the M-51 was produced in March and the thicker cotton satin fabric was used only in May. Considering the wartime cost, it can be said that cotton nylon, a thin fabric, was the basic fabric used. In military uniforms, there is a culture of calling the main body ” shell,” which means to protect oneself like a seashell.
Mods Coat Feature 2: “Adjustable fishtail hem
One of the characteristic details of mod coats is the “fishtail,” a split tail hem at the back that wraps around the lower leg with a drawcord sewn in around the hem. Because of its unique shape, it is sometimes called a “fishtail parka” in Europe and the United States. In addition to the M-51 mod coat, the M-48 parka, its predecessor, and its successor, the M-65 parka, also have a distinctive fishtail.
Mods Coat Feature (3): “Fur Hood to Protect Against the Cold
With an eye to protecting against the cold, the M-51 is equipped with a fur hood trimmed with animal fur. The M-51’s fur trimmed hood can be removed with a button. Since many hoods are designed with a double-layered structure, the fur-lined hood can be removed and worn as a single hood without fur sewn to the main body.
Mods Coat Feature (4): “Removable Liner to Enhance Warmth
Since this is a military uniform produced for activities in extremely cold regions, the liner included as one of the specifications to enhance heat retention is also a distinctive feature. In consideration of use outside of cold regions, the liner is often designed to be removable. In addition, a drawcord at the waist to prevent drafts from the hem can be used in combination with the liner to achieve a high level of warmth retention. The pockets on the liner are one of the details designed to store various weapons during wartime.
Mod Coat Feature (5): “Epaulets used to secure equipment and as handles for pulling wounded soldiers.
The epaulettes on the shoulders, a detail often seen on military items, are also found on the M-51, as usual. The epaulettes were used to secure equipment to military uniforms and as handles to drag soldiers who had collapsed due to wounds.
In recent years, many brands have developed mod coats, partly due to the military boom.
