Many men are not very particular about what they wear when they go to the beauty parlor or barbershop. However, for hairdressers and barbers, it is quite important what kind of clothes they wear when they visit the salon. We spoke with Ryohei Katsuma, a hair and makeup artist who is also the head of his own salon, about “what to wear when going to a beauty salon.
In 2010, she studied under hair artist Hanjee, and in 2013, she became independent. In 2020, he launched Atelier Sienna, a hair salon, where he also serves as a representative.

What is the preferred attire to wear to a beauty salon?
“After all, it doesn’t matter what kind of clothes I wear, as long as I wear a cross when I cut hair, does it?” There must be many people who think, “After all, it doesn’t matter what kind of clothes I wear, as long as I wear a cross when I cut. However, according to Mr. Katsuma, he looks at the clothes of the customers who visit his salon to find out what they like and fine-tune the hair style so that the hair style and clothes are compatible with each other. Therefore, the client is basically encouraged to come in “as usual. If you have a favorite outfit, you can wear it to the hair salon and tell them about the atmosphere and preferences of your usual outfit to get a higher quality result.
What are the clothes you don’t want people to wear to the beauty salon?
“”The tops with a distinctive neckline are the ones that are a bit of a problem for me,” Katsuma said. Thanks to the difficulty in tightening the cross, there is a possibility of staining it, and it feels difficult to cut, which is often inconvenient,” she says. Here are some of the clothes that make it difficult for hairdressers. It is a good idea to avoid these clothes when going to a hair salon.
Clothes to avoid at the beauty salon: 1) “Hoodies.”
The first item mentioned was the hoodie. They say that the hood, which should be called the most distinctive feature, is just in the way. It is difficult to cut the collar, and it does not fit on the shampoo table. In particular, thick hoodies made of heavy-weight sweatshirt fabric may not even be able to be crossed. If you want to wear a hoodie, it should be a zip hoodie that is easy to take off and put on, or in the case of a pullover, take it off before the treatment if you can.
Clothes to avoid at the beauty salon (2) “White clothes.”
In limited situations, Mr. Katsuma says he feels pressured if people come in white when he performs color treatments. He explains, “Of course, we take great care not to stain clothes of any color, but with white, the stains are easily noticeable and even a little bit on the clothes blotches, so it puts pressure on us.” In addition, accidents can occur, such as clothes sticking out of the cloth or colorant splattering onto chairs and other surfaces when they move. Therefore, if you are going to dye your hair, it is best to wear dark-toned clothes.
Clothes to avoid at the beauty salon (3) “Shirts.”
Shirts are a basic item for men. The collar is so tight and high that even if you wrap a towel around your neck, the collar will show and the cut line will be difficult to see. Also, if the collar is stiff and difficult to bend, as shown in the photo below, there will be a gap and the cut hair may get in. (2) As mentioned in (2 ), white clothing tends to show dirt easily, which is another reason why shirts are not preferred.
Extra “Sandals and Mouton Boots.”
Sandals and mouton boots were mentioned as footwear that is not recommended for customers from the hairdresser’s point of view, because it is easy for cut hair to stick to them and also difficult to remove the hair. He said that when wearing sandals with bare feet, hair tends to stick to them due to sweat, and mouton boots are bristly and tangle with hair. However, Katsuma advised that basically cut hair rarely falls forward, and as long as the feet are firmly in the cloth, there is no need to worry about getting them dirty.
