What is the best fashion for BBQ? Five different perspectives on men's items that are handy to have!

BBQ is one of the most enjoyable events in summer. Whether it is a gathering of friends, an in-house recreational event, or a social gathering hosted by an acquaintance, it is an event where a large number of people tend to gather, so it is important to dress in a way that makes a good impression while emphasizing ease of movement. In this issue, we focus on what to look out for in men’s BBQ fashion, and introduce recommended items!

BBQ Fashion Recommendation #1: “Clothing that allows for ease of movement while still looking mature is fundamental.”

From preparation to cleanup, barbecue is a time of active activity, so clothing that is easy to move around in is preferable. For tops, wear a size that is moderately comfortable. If you are wearing long sleeves, a design with cuffs that are tucked in will not get in the way of your work and allow you to enjoy a stress-free BBQ. As for the design, it is easy to maintain a mature atmosphere by adjusting to a simple design such as one-pointed or solid color.

For bottoms, we recommend stretchy materials that do not drag at the hems. Pants that can be rolled up to adjust the length or jogger pants are good choices.

BBQ Fashion Recommendation #2: “Incorporate clothing made of flame-retardant materials.

Since fire sparks may fly into clothes during a barbecue, choose flame-retardant clothing in case of an accident. Outdoor brands such as Nanga and Snow Peak offer clothing made of flame-resistant materials such as Kevlar® and Kanecaron®, so be sure to check them out.

Conversely, fabrics that burn easily include wool, cotton, rayon, and cupra made from natural materials. Fabrics with a fine texture that contains a lot of oxygen and fluff tend to cause a surface flash, a phenomenon in which a fire spreads quickly when ignited by clothing. Be especially careful when camping in winter when the air is dry, as it is not uncommon for people to wear fleece or other firmer clothing. Polyester and nylon materials are less likely to catch fire, but they melt easily and are easily punctured by small sparks from fire.

If you only have a few BBQs a year, you may not want to go out of your way to purchase flame-retardant clothing. For such people, it is recommended to use a fire retardant spray to increase flame retardancy in advance. Also, in the unlikely event that a fire does spread to clothing, STOP, DROP and ROLL (stop, fall and roll) can minimize damage. This is a fire safety technique that is common knowledge in English-speaking countries, but surprisingly not widespread in Japan, so it is important to keep it in mind.

BBQ Fashion Recommendation 3: “Choose easy-care clothing that won’t show dirt.

Since barbeques are prone to grill smells and stains, it is better to choose clothes that are easy-care and do not show stains. Clothing that specifies in the laundry name that it must be dry-cleaned only should not be worn because of the time and effort required to care for it after the BBQ. If there is a possibility of getting wet at a riverside BBQ, it is a good idea to choose clothes that dry quickly.

To prevent stains, it is also a good idea to choose stain-resistant clothing. It is also recommended to choose clothes in colors that do not show dirt easily. Military-inspired colors such as khaki and beige will give you a trend-conscious look.
