What is tweed?

Tweed is a textile made from hand-spun thick wool that is roughly woven into a plain weave or twill weave by hand, and finished in a coarse, stiff fabric without shrinking or raising the wool. The greatest feature of tweed is its durability as well as heat retention, and in Europe, some families pass down tweed jackets from parent to child for three generations. It is also said that ” a tweed jacket is only as good as it gets. In recent years, there are many models with vintage or soft finishes that give the jacket a worn look and feel.

Incidentally, “homespun,” a specialty of Scotland in England, is said to be the origin of tweed. It was made in the Border region, which bordered on England, and it is widely believed that the name was derived from the “River Tweed” that flows along the border. There is also a theory that the word “tweed” originated when a trading company in London mispronounced the name “tweed” after what was called “twill” in the area of origin.

The most famous tweed in Japan is “Harris Tweed,” which is also known as the “King of Tweeds” because it is considered to be the finest tweed available. There are many other variations of tweeds by region, such as “Edinburgh Tweed,” “Donegal Tweed,” “Shetland Tweed,” etc. There are many variations. Tweed is synonymous with autumn and winter, but there are also “summer tweeds” made of linen and cotton that are easy to wear in the hot summer months.
