Levi's 501's 150th anniversary model, newly introduced plant-based sustainable jeans

Levi’s® has introduced a Plant-Based 501®, a hemp/cotton blend selvedge 501®, and a circular 501® made from used clothing as new items to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the 501®. The Plant-Based 501® will be available at Levi’s® Sales Stors and the official online store from August 25 (Friday).

Levi’s 501®, celebrating 150 years since its birth, launches new jeans made from sustainable materials

Plant-Based 501®, made of more than 97% plant-derived materials, are all made of Organic Cotton Standard (OCS) certified organically grown cotton. The colors, dyed in plant-derived indigo, are inspired by Levi’s® X70 archival shades. The back patch is made of MIRUM®, a plant-based leather material from NFW. This material is bio-based, plastic-free, and produces no wastewater during production. In addition, ink made from wood waste was used for the print. The inner pocket bag slips, the woven labels and sewing threads used in the details of the garment are also made of 100% cotton. In terms of the weight of the parts to the overall weight, at least 97% of the jeans are made from bio-based materials.

Paul Dellinger, who leads Levi’s® innovation and sustainability efforts, said, “As a company that has been making 501® for 150 years, we have the opportunity and the responsibility to continually question what is best about the process by which jeans are made. These jeans build on past efforts to create more cyclical jeans, which in turn are the foundation for future innovation.”

Combining the innovation of premium selvedge fabrics with alternative fibers, the 501® in cottonized hemp selvedge will be available year-round. In addition, the first circular 501® made from worn clothes, first introduced in 2022, will also be available in celebration of the 150th anniversary. These 501® jeans are made from Circulose® fiber, a pioneer in organic cotton, and viscose produced from recycled denim and other garment waste. The use of these materials greatly reduces the amount of natural resources and chemicals used in the production process. The main feature of these jeans is that they are designed to be efficiently recycled without producing toxic substances when they are worn out and transformed into the next article of clothing.

Una Murphy, Global Innovation and Design Director at Levi’s®, said, “We are committed to continuous research and development to improve our design methodology and to the development of new products. We are committed to improving design practices and conserving environmental resources in our ongoing research and development. By incorporating sustainable innovation into our mainline and premium products, we can learn what is possible and how we can continue to work toward solving our biggest environmental challenges.” He stated.
