Sublimating Levi’s denim into a modern artistic style with excellent Japanese craftsmanship and venerable traditional craftsmanship
When denim production was introduced to Japan during the rationing era of World War II, Japanese craftsmen began producing garments by operating old shuttle looms by hand. In the 1950s, when rock and roll and other forms of American culture became increasingly popular, the Japanese developed American denim production styles and constantly refined the Japanese tradition of meticulous craftsmanship. And now, Japanese denim has become one of the most admired and coveted fabrics in the world. In this Made in Japan collection, traditional Japanese techniques are incorporated into classic Levi’s® signature silhouettes, and the unparalleled craftsmanship has elevated denim to a modern art form.
Premium selvedge from the Kaihara Denim Factory in Hiroshima, renowned for its impeccable attention to detail and tireless dedication to tradition, the iconic Levi’s® fits of the 501®, 505™ and 511™ are combined with a variety of washes synonymous with Japanese craftsmanship. The denim will be made in a variety of washes that are synonymous with Japanese craftsmanship.
Each item in this collection has a unique texture, depth, and character. Styles feature unique arrow pattern patchwork in various shades of denim, and include three styles: women’s Barrel Jeans, men’s 1980 501® and TYPE3 Trucker Jacket. In addition, women’s bottoms include the popular fit column, high-rise boyfriend and barrel jeans. For tops, the clean and atmospheric women’s TYPE2 Trucker Jacket will be available.
Items in this Made in Japan collection feature special details such as the katakana “Levi’s®” hidden behind indigo tabs, a Hinomaru-inspired inner label, and a back patch stamped “MADE IN JAPAN. The collection also includes the highest quality Japanese garments. The collection also includes the Made of Japan series made from the highest quality Japanese denim fabrics, enhancing the collection with denim fabrics made in Japan.
“Japan is recognized as one of the most advanced denim producers on the planet, thanks to its highly sophisticated technology and extraordinary craftsmanship and attention to detail.” said Paul O’Neill, Design Director of Levi Strauss & Company. He continued, “We are pleased to continue our partnership with the world-renowned Kaihara Denim Company for the Fall/Winter 2023 Made in Japan collection. We have created a beautiful collection, ranging from the simple use of great denim in a wide range of classic silhouettes, to eye catching arrow designs with intricate washes and design flair.” he stated. The campaign visuals for this collection were shot throughout Tokyo, from day to night, to highlight the exquisitely crafted details and versatility of the denim. The visuals also feature Japanese models wearing different types of jeans on the streets of Tokyo.
