Everything from the denim fabric to the shank buttons and pocket flashers is made in Japan for the Limited Edition 1937 501®.
The All Japan Edition of the ever-popular 501® from Levi’s® Vintage Clothing, a reissue collection that faithfully reproduces precious lot numbers from the past. Each year, the brand introduces a new vintage 501® style, using Japanese selvedge denim and translating every detail into Japanese, including the back patch, red tab, pocket flasher, and button engraving. Levi’s® Vintage Clothing creates limited edition jeans that pay homage to Japan, a country that boasts the best denim production and craftsmanship unrivaled by any other country. This time, as part of the 150th anniversary celebration, the 1937 Japan 501® was created.

The 1937 Levi’s® 501® is a perfect blend of early models and modern jeans in many ways. The cinch back was retained, and press-on buttons were distributed as a novelty as an alternative to suspender buttons. The Big E red tab on the right back pocket was adopted to identify the jeans as Levi’s® jeans from a distance. In response to complaints that the rivets on the back pockets scratched furniture, the rivets were covered by the denim fabric of the pockets. Then, for the first time in the brand’s history, the rivets were made visible by a salmon-colored paper pocket flasher. The flasher is marked with an arrow pointing to the corner of the pocket and the words “The Rivet’s Still There (You can’t see it, but the rivet is here).

Like the previous All Japan Edition 501®, the 1937 version also uses denim fabric made in Japan. The wash process gives the fabric a fluffy appearance, which is one of the best features of Japanese denim. The red tab, back patch, rivets, and other parts are all made in Japan, and the letters on the patch and flasher are written in katakana. The “1937 501® is a very beautiful pair of jeans, symbolizing the transition from the old world to the new. They have belt loops and cinch backs, but the suspender buttons that were optional in this era are disappearing. Also, red tabs are being used for the first time, and the rivets on the back pockets have been replaced by new hidden rivets instead of the traditional bare ones. So we thought a countdown from 1890 501® to 1937 501® would be the perfect way to celebrate Levi’s® 150th anniversary.” says Paul O’Neill, Design Director of Levi’s® Vintage Clothing.
