The New Year collection is released by Vans to coincide with each year’s Chinese zodiac sign. This year, to celebrate the start of the 2020s and the arrival of the Year of the Child, Zhao Zhao (赵赵), a Chinese artist based in Beijing and LA who has garnered international attention, has designed the collection. The “YEAR OF THE RAT COLLECTION” currently on sale features 5 models including the brand’s classic models such as Old School, Skate High, and Era, all inspired by the street rats who survive underground life with their unique creativity. ZAO ZAO’s designs express the adventurous and challenging spirit of street rats, which is in line with the “OFF THE WALL” spirit of VANS. The heel tab, which features a special logo combining the words “OFF THE WALL” and a rat’s tail to symbolize this collection, is one of the highlights of this collection.

OLD SKOOL
The “OLD SKOOL,” which everyone would imagine if they heard of the classic Vans model, has a light gray suede upper with the brand’s iconic jazz stripe in dark gray, and a patch overlaid on the heel to represent the entrance to the tunnel where the rats are. Also noteworthy is Vans’ familiar waffle sole finished in pink.

The “ERA,” popular around the world for its simple and casual appearance, features a monotone suede upper and outsole. Like the “OLD SKOOL,” a special pink tab is superimposed on the heel.

The “SK8-HI” features an upper with more side stripes than the regular model and a transparent waffle sole with a circular pattern to represent an underground rat tunnel.

The “Comfycush SLIP-SKOOL,” a fusion of Vans’ classic SLIP-ON and OLD SKOOL, features a transparent OLD SKOOL case on top of the SLIP-ON, which represents the path of a dynamic rat in a dense urban environment. It is a unique and original design. The “Comfycush” insole is also used in this model to ensure long-lasting comfort.
