What is a coin loafer (penny loafer)?
Inspired by the moccasin shoes worn by North American native Indians and the simple slip-ons of Norwegian fishermen, Nils Gregoriussen Tveranger, a Norwegian who learned shoemaking skills in the U.S., developed the Aurland These moccasin shoes, made by Nils Gregoriussen Tveranger and his shoemakers, became popular not only in their native Norway, but also in Europe and the United States. Later, the Spalding family of New Hampshire, USA, began manufacturing similar shoes called loafers. In 1934, GH Bass styled the loafer by adding a belt decoration called a saddle with a half-moon cutout slot into which a penny coin, considered a good-luck charm, could be inserted. These moccasins are officially considered the original coin loafers (penny loafers).
