The P coat was adopted by the Royal Navy in the first half of the 19th century. Unlike army and navy wear, the greatest feature of naval wear is that it incorporates a worker element. This is because it was made with an emphasis on workability on deck, rather than for field use. In other words, the design is a chance encounter between military and work, which is a specification unique to the Navy. Also, perhaps because of its history of being born in the U.K., it is different from other military wear in that it has a collar and is rich in dignity. Generally, it is double-breasted with melton wool, handwarmer pockets, and buttons with anchor marks.
