What is Vans’ catchphrase “OFF THE WALL”?

OFF THE WALL” translates directly to “off the wall,” but it also means “out of the ordinary or weird,” which was slang for a skate group called Z-Boys. When Tony Alva, a member of the group, did a move that only he could do while skating in the pool, Skip Engblom, the owner of Z-Boys, shouted “OFF THE WALL,” and the term came to be used to describe someone who was unconventional. The term “off the wall” has come to be used to describe an unconventional person.

The reason why it started to be used as a catchphrase for Vans was that Mr. Tony Alba wore Vans. And the fact that the custom-made production at that time was “unconventional.

Vans’ Return from Business Failure

Sneakers were selling so well that Vans opened nearly 70 stores in California around the 1980s. Later, founder Paul Van Doren left the company, and the company’s over-expansion led to financial difficulties and a bankruptcy in 1984. The court applied the Civil Rehabilitation Law to the company on the condition that Paul Van Doren return as president. At the time, Paul Van Doren told all employees, “You may not get a raise for the next three years, but we have to cut costs on everything. However, we must never reduce the quality of Vans shoes.” These words of wisdom have been passed down to posterity.

Vans goes from business failure to being a leading skater company
