On December 2, Danner and new balance launched the “AMERICAN PIONEER COLLECTION,” a collaboration between Danner and new balance. In this second edition, the “Mountain Lite,” which continues to reign as Danner’s signature model, and the popular New balance model “995” have been carefully crafted using materials and technology that are appropriate to express both brands.
What is the Danner x new balance “AMERICAN PIONEER COLLECTION “?
The story of this collaboration began with an 1835 penny coin. Asa Lovejoy from Boston, Massachusetts, and William Pettygrove from Portland, Maine, acquired land in Oregon, and in 1845, a coin toss was held to name the town, and the 1835 penny was used. Their hometowns, Boston and Portland, are home to New Balance and Danner, respectively. This odd anecdote brought the two brands together, and a collaboration named after the penny coin became a reality.

The “M995” was introduced in 1986 and quickly became popular for its shock absorption and stability. This pair of running shoes is now updated with premium nubuck leather for a luxurious look and feel. The laces are colored to resemble the greenish blue of copper, and the eyelets have a rusty, old-fashioned look. In addition, the heel counter is embossed with the same size as the penny (approximately 19.5mm), marking the topography of the state of Massachusetts, where New Balance’s US factory is located. The pair features a Vibram sole that is both lightweight and durable, and also offers a high level of stability.
Mountain Light Pioneer NB
Since its release in the early 1980s, the “Mountain Lite” has reigned as one of Danner’s most iconic products. It is still handmade in the Portland factory and assembled using the Danner stitchdown method. The Gore-Tex bootie provides waterproof and breathable comfort inside the shoe. The bronze color, unique to this collaborative project, blends beautifully with the traditional form.
