Hublot Unveils the “Classic Fusion Tribute”! A Tribute to the Model That Shook the Watch Industry in 1980

HUBLOT has unveiled the “Classic Fusion Tribute” in yellow gold and white gold as a tribute to the timepiece that laid the foundation for the brand.

”Hublot ‘Classic Fusion Tribute’”A tribute model to the luxury watch ‘Hublot’ that shook the watch industry in 1980”

The “Classic Fusion Tribute” brings together the technical expertise and know-how cultivated by the Manufacture since its founding in 1980, marking a return to the brand’s roots. These design codes—such as the contrast between gold and rubber, and black—which symbolize the original model, have been elevated to new heights through 46 years of watchmaking expertise in movement, finishing, materials, and construction. The inspiration for the newly unveiled “Classic Fusion Tribute” lies in the model created by Carlo Croco in 1980, which “fused” gold and rubber and sent shockwaves through the watch industry.Under the name MDM Genève, Mr. Croco unveiled a watch called “Hublot” at the Basel Fair. This original model completely overturned the conventional wisdom of luxury watches at the time. It stripped away ornamentation to pursue the essence of luxury. The first step in this direction was the bold contrast of materials—unprecedented at the time. The bezel, reminiscent of a ship’s porthole, featured 12 screws, while the dial boasted a simple design with minimal ornamentation. It was minimalist, graphic, and possessed a distinct personality that was instantly recognizable.Rather than adhering to the conventions of Swiss watchmaking, this timepiece challenged history and broke the rules.

The “Classic Fusion Tribute” connects the watch that marked the brand’s origins with the Hublot of today, integrating the evolution of the Manufacture’s accumulated technical expertise and know-how. It is both a tribute to its roots and a watch that embodies the essence of Hublot as it stands today. What began as a single innovative idea has now become one of the most iconic design codes in the watch industry.

The Distinctive Features and Common Elements of the Two ‘Classic Fusion Tribute’ ModelsInheriting the design of the original model: a yellow gold model featuring the “MDM” logo and a white gold model with a formal, Italian-tailored aesthetic

The two “Classic Fusion Tribute” models announced this time—the yellow gold and white gold versions—share the same DNA, the same structure, the same technical foundation, and the same finishes. However, it is also worth noting that they possess distinct personalities. The yellow gold model is the one that most closely resembles the first watch Hublot ever produced. The black lacquered dial features a subtle charcoal effect, carrying on the contrast between gold and rubber seen in the original. A yellow gold rotor is used inside the movement, further enhancing the sense of unity in the materials. At the 6 o’clock position on the dial, the “MDM” logo is pad-printed in gold. This detail signifies the connection between Carlo Croco and the original “MDM Genève” signature engraved on the first Hublot. This signature transcends the realm of watchmaking and also pays tribute to the philanthropic activities in which Mr. Croco took a deep interest. MDM stands for the “Main Dans la Main Foundation,” established in 1998, and reflects Mr. Croco’s longstanding commitment to social causes.

The white gold model, on the other hand, presents a different look.It possesses a more formal and ceremonial presence, incorporating the elegance of Italian tailoring. The polished black onyx dial and black screws lend depth and strength to the design, evoking the refined rhythm created by the delicate details of tailoring.Inside the movement, a black tungsten rotor is featured. This further accentuates its unique character and emphasizes the watch’s refined and exceptionally sophisticated design.

From its gold architecture to the Hublot Manufacture movement, the “Classic Fusion Tribute” carries on the legacy of the design introduced in 1980, proving that the bold fusion of materials continues to thrive across the ages. Its timeless appeal gives Hublot unwavering confidence in its watchmaking. Conceived, developed, and assembled in Nyon, this timepiece embodies the Manufacture’s precision, reliability, and technical excellence.

The Mechanism of the ‘Classic Fusion Tribute’”Elements such as the date display and the 12 bezel screws that indicate the time are scattered throughout the design, reflecting the intention to recreate the original model

Although the case diameter has increased from 36 mm to 38 mm, the overall proportions remain unchanged. The 12 slightly domed bezel screws are noticeable to the touch. Furthermore, just like the original model, they also serve to indicate the hour on a dial that features no hour markers. The date display also faithfully inherits the original model’s design and is positioned at the 3 o’clock mark. A screw-down crown ensures water resistance of 10 atm, further enhancing practicality. The black-lined rubber strap is paired with deliberately exposed lugs, highlighting the watch’s structure itself.Furthermore, the decision not to adopt the “one-click” system is a deliberate choice to preserve the original’s DNA. Every detail is carefully considered.

And the interior has been completely redesigned.Originally launched in 1980 as a quartz watch, this model now features an in-house automatic movement. Thanks to the optimization of the gear train, the automatic winding mechanism achieves a power reserve of approximately 50 hours.Through the sapphire crystal case back, one can see the openworked rotor shaped like the iconic “H” of Hublot. Without losing sight of its original concept, its design reflects the current Hublot—sharper, more profound, and technically more advanced.Built to be cherished for years to come, it is covered by the “5+5 Year Warranty” program, offering up to 10 years of coverage. This reflects Hublot’s unwavering belief that “design, craftsmanship, and reliability are built to stand the test of time.”

Comments from Hublot’s Founder and CEOCarrying the Pride of Our 1980 ‘Origins’ Into Today’s Hublot Creations

Hublot Founder Carlo Croco: “When I launched MDM Geneva, it was a very personal challenge for me. I rolled up my sleeves, put my heart into it, and pursued a single idea: ‘gold and rubber.’Entrusting that to others—even highly skilled and talented individuals—was never an easy decision for me. However, when I return to Nyon, visit the Manufacture, and see the latest creations, I can see that they are imbued with a true sense of heritage and exceptional craftsmanship. And I witness firsthand what has been built by so many people.Watching Hublot’s evolution, I realize that decision was the best one I’ve ever made in my life. It fills me with immense pride and deep gratitude. And today, seeing the original design and the origins of “The Art of Fusion” come to life once again is deeply moving.”

Hublot CEO Julien Tornare: “Respecting Hublot means cherishing its origins—not by freezing time, but by constantly evolving.”The ‘Classic Fusion Tribute’ perfectly embodies this philosophy by creating a direct link between 1980 and the present. Carlo Croco’s vision remains unchanged to this day.It is sharp, innovative, and full of power. Today, that vision takes shape as we pour the full technical expertise of our manufacture into it. It reflects the minimalism he envisioned in the design, while also expressing the depth of watchmaking that Hublot achieves today.”

Furthermore, as a mark of respect for Carlo Croccò’s philosophy and values, 100,000 Swiss francs will be donated to the “Main Dans la Main Foundation,” which he founded. This initiative reflects the brand’s desire to contribute to the causes that its founder continues to hold dear.Founded in 1998 by Carlo Croco, the MDM Foundation is engaged in humanitarian aid and educational initiatives aimed at improving the lives of underprivileged children and communities in need.
