
On Friday, October 31, TARATRAS launched a new project, “Layers of Japanese Craft,” which aims to reinterpret the multi-layered charms of Japanese culture and reconstruct them in the form of fashion, launching a capsule collection that fuses the traditional craftsmanship of Wajima with modern sensibilities. The art direction for the entire collection was provided by the graphic designers. The entire collection is art-directed by graphic artist YOSHIROTTEN.

This collection aims to reinterpret the multi-layered appeal inherent in Japanese culture and reconstruct it in the form of fashion. This collection aims to reinterpret the multi-layered charms inherent in Japanese culture and reconstruct them in the form of fashion. The keyword “Layers” in the theme of the project launched by TARATLAS is intended to symbolize Japan’s unique sense of beauty, in which the layers of time and culture are layered, such as tradition and modernity, materials and techniques, and memory and future. TARATLAS has been continuously working to fuse traditional Japanese craftsmanship with modern sensibilities, and in 2024, in collaboration with Kyoto-based Asahi Ware, the company unveiled a special product to commemorate the opening of its flagship store in Ginza, Tokyo. This capsule collection is a further evolution of that philosophy, and is intended to be a reflection of the “now” of Japanese culture.

Adopting the traditional technique of lacquering
At the heart of this project is the color expression of “Bokashi Nuri”, a traditional technique of Japanese lacquering. Focusing on the depth and shifting light created by the overlapping layers of lacquer, we incorporated this into the visual identity that forms the core of the entire collection.
TATLAS has reconstructed fashion by replacing the beauty of the gradation created by its blur painting technique with textiles and forms. Wajima lacquer artist Kohei Kirimoto also created a two-meter pillar-shaped object by lacquering layers of the same colors. At the flagship store in Ginza, he has created a new creation that is rooted in traditional Japanese techniques, yet resonates with contemporary aesthetics.
The two companies pursue a common concept of color, creating a unified worldview where tradition and modernity resonate. And the art direction for this project is by graphic artist YOSHIROTTEN. YOSHIROTTEN’s work, which visually expresses light, time, and culture in “layers,” is highly acclaimed both in Japan and abroad, and deeply resonates with TARATLUS’ theme of “the modern reconstruction of tradition. His skills are also on full display in the store decorated for a limited time, creating a world view with orange and green as the key colors.

Capsule Collection ItemsDown jackets, down pants and bags that fuse tradition and modernity!
This capsule collection features three items: a down jacket, down pants, and a bag. Each item is composed of two colors, orange and green, and each item has a delicate gradation design inspired by the traditional Japanese lacquer technique of Wajima-nuri (lacquer painting). By sublimating the deep color expression of lacquer into textiles, visual layers and depth are created, creating items with a unique presence at the intersection of tradition and modernity.
