OMEGA's technological masterpiece, the Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep, reaches a new world record for diving

Adventurer Viktor Veskovo set a world diving record at a depth of 10,928 meters. The OMEGA diver’s watch ” Planet Ocean ” supported him in this record. On the occasion of this feat, OMEGA’s CEO presented the watch that reached the world’s deepest depth at the British Museum in London. He also introduced the unprecedented technology that helped him achieve the record. Look for the ” Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep ” to bring that technology to the general market in the future!

World’s Deepest Seamaster Unveiled at the British Museum

In the first half of 2019, adventurer Victor Vescovo reached the deepest point of the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean in his deep-sea submersible “Limiting Factor” and set a world diving record with a depth of 10,928 meters. OMEGA, which was involved in the project, was applauded for this feat. The ” Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep ” supported the world-record dive. Two of the three watches were attached to the submersible’s robotic arm, and the other was attached to a lander collecting records at the bottom of the ocean.

Commenting on the Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra-Deep, which completed its mission without difficulty under extreme water pressure, OMEGA President and CEO Reynaldo Acheriman said, “These timepieces, which are a collection of exceptional technical masterpieces, illustrate the originality of OMEGA watchmaking.” commented Reinaldo Acherlimann, President and CEO of OMEGA. Adventurer Victor Vescovo, who also attended the London event, praised the OMEGA project team for their “ability to produce the perfect marine watch that is not only incredibly robust, but also slim, lightweight, and stylish. Vescovo praised the OMEGA project team.

Eventually for the general market? Ultra-Deep” technology foreshadows the future of the Seamaster

The production of professional divers’ watches is one of OMEGA’s specialties, as evidenced by the fact that the Seamaster series is one of the most popular in the watchmaking world. However, developing a timepiece for the Five Deeps expedition required an entirely different level of creativity and extensive engineering expertise. The “Ultra-Deep” is a collection of technologies that work in the deep sea.

While the design of a full-scale diver’s watch tends to be a bit on the fussy side due to the emphasis on functionality, the slim case measuring less than 28mm is another key feature. The bezel, case, caseback, and crown are made of grade 5 titanium, a material cut off by machine from the hull of the “Limiting Factor. The use of liquid metal in the assembly of the sapphire glass and the case also allows the thickness of the sapphire glass to be reduced.

The “Planet Ocean Ultra Deep” was manufactured to withstand extreme conditions. On the other hand, the work was also carried out with a view to commercial use in the future. It is not far off in the future that this unprecedented technology will appear on the market in another form.
