Waterman is a manufacturer of writing instruments established in the late 19th century. It was the first company in the world to develop a nib using capillary action and to apply it to fountain pens. The nib using capillary action later became a common practice for fountain pens and revolutionized the writing instrument industry. Many famous people have used Waterman pens, and Waterman fountain pens were used to sign the Potsdam Declaration in 1945. Waterman was founded in the U.S., but today it is a French luxury writing instruments brand that produces fountain pens and ballpoint pens. The company has developed an attractive collection inspired by Parisian culture, including “Exception,” “Cullen,” and “Metropolitan.”

Developed the world’s first fountain pen based on capillary action

The founder of Waterman, Lewis Edson Waterman, was an insurance salesman in the United States. One day, he was preparing a brand-new fountain pen for a major contract, but ink leaked from the fountain pen and stained the contract. When he hurriedly brought a new contract, it had already been signed with a rival company. This bitter experience led him to develop “The Regular” in 1883, the first in the world to apply capillary action. In 1888, the company changed its name to ” Le Waterman (LE WATERMAN). The technology established by the founder, Waterman, is still passed down to many fountain pens more than 130 years later.

Waterman was the originator of the now commonplace “cap with clip” and “cartridge ink!

In 1899, Waterman developed the ” Spoon Field ” feeding system, which prevented ink leakage. The following year, a Waterman pen won a gold medal at the Paris International Exposition. Waterman was also the first in the world to develop a cap with a clip. Against this backdrop, ink leakage was reduced, and pens came to be used as portable products.
