What is a trench coat?
The trench coat is said to have originated as a waterproof coat worn by the British army in the trenches during the First World War. It is characterized by its excellent durability and waterproofness, as well as its “functional beauty” design based on the functionality of combat uniforms.
The most distinctive feature of the trench coat is the fabric. The classic trench coat uses gabardine, a fabric invented by Burberry’s founder Thomas Burberry in 1879. Gabardine is an excellent fabric that is waterproofed before being worsted, and then densely woven to improve water repellency and durability. At a time when rubberized raincoats were the norm, this gabardine garnered a great deal of attention. The name “gabardine” is derived from the word “gaberdine” (gabardine, gabardine), which came to mean a cloak for rain or a smock for body protection.
