What is Adidas’ classic “Superstar” sneaker?
The Adidas Superstar was born in 1969 as the world’s first basketball shoe with an all-leather upper. Until then, the basketball shoe market was dominated by Converse, and their cotton canvas high-top model, the ” All Star,” was the mainstream, but when basketball players made the sharp turns and changes of direction required, the ankles and knees were stressed, causing injuries. So Adidas developed the Superstar, which implemented a full leather upper, super grip, and a reinforced, sturdy shell toe. 1969 Just four years after the Superstar was introduced, 85% of professional basketball players in the United States were playing in Adidas shoes! It is said that 85% of professional basketball players in the U.S. were playing in Adidas shoes.

In the 1980s, the legendary hip-hop group Run-DMC took the showbiz world by storm, wearing Superstars and other Adidas leather sneakers and Adidas tracksuits. The music video for their 1986 song “My Adidas” shows them performing live wearing Superstars, and the audience holding up their Adidas sneakers as they rap gives a glimpse of the immense popularity of the Superstars and other Adidas sneakers at the time.
