First, check out our video on how to care for your leather shoes!

The care methods introduced in this article are also available on OTOKOMAE’s YouTube channel. Mr. Mitsuhashi of Columbus demonstrates and introduces the basics and tips of care, so be sure to check it out.

And here is a step-by-step introduction of how to care for them.

Four steps on how to care for your leather shoes that should be done on the day you wear them!

Dust and dirt on shoes, if left unattended, can cause deterioration by forming stains or absorbing oil from the leather. In order to remove the dirt and dust that cause these problems as soon as possible and extend the life of the shoes, Mr. Mitsuhashi says there are certain care procedures that should be performed when returning home on the day of wear. Once you are familiar with this care, it does not take much time, so please take this opportunity to check it out. The tools used here are a horsehair brush, a pig-bristle brush, a shoe care cloth, and a shoe bag.

How to take care of your leather shoes on the day you wear them: 1) “Put in a shoe keeper as a preliminary step, and tuck away the shoelaces inside that will interfere with the care.

First, when you get home, it is important to put in a shoe keeper to keep your shoes in shape. In addition to preventing the shoes from losing their shape, a wooden shoe keeper will deodorize and dehumidify the shoes. Also, keep shoe laces inside the shoe keeper to prevent them from getting in the way of care.

The basic care of leather shoes starts with brushing. Use a horsehair brush to remove dirt and dust on that day. In particular, we should be especially careful on the heel, laces, and creases, where dirt tends to accumulate and dust tends to accumulate.

If you take care of your shoes on a regular basis, we recommend using a hog-bristle brush soaked in cream. Using a well-used brush will not only bring back the luster, but also make it easier to remove scratches and other marks on the leather.

3) “Wipe dry with shoe care cloth to clean and condition the leather shoes on the day they are worn.

After brushing off dirt, wipe dry with a shoe care cloth. This process increases the luster of the leather, removes excess oil, and prevents dust and dirt from sticking to the leather.

After the shoes have been thoroughly wiped dry, store them in a shoe box or shoe locker. If you store each pair of shoes in a shoe bag, you can prevent them from rubbing against each other and getting dirty, as well as protect them from mold. Shoe bags can be purchased for as little as 500 yen, so if you do not have one, this would be a good time to consider purchasing one.
