Attraction of Alden “9901” (5) “360-degree Goodyear manufacturing method for maximum comfort

Alden shoes are made using either 270-degree Goodyear or 360-degree Goodyear, but the 9901 uses the 360-degree Goodyear method, in which the heel is sewn with a 360-degree thread that circles the heel. The Goodyear welt method, which boasts high durability, has the advantage that the sole can be replaced and can withstand long-term use. Between the insole and outsole, cork kneaded with pine resin is used to enhance cushioning. The cork sinks into the sole as the wearer wears it, improving the fit.

Alden’s pursuit of the highest level of comfort is the tradition of “plenty of cork. The 360-degree Goodyear process, also known as the “all-around Goodyear process,” allows cork to be spread all the way down to the calf. Since metal parts such as the shank can be omitted, the weight reduction and cushioning properties are greater than those of the general Goodyear welt method used for shoes made in England.

Alden’s supreme craftsmanship on the heel and split welt.

The beautiful cowl of the 9901 is also noteworthy. After the welt and outsole are sewn together, a skilled craftsman presses the sole around the sole against a rotating cutter to shave it to the same width without any vertical movement. After that, paint is applied to the leather, waxed with a cloth buff, and carefully polished to a glossy finish to create a beautiful leather that does not lose its strength to the shell cordovan upper.

The welt also reflects Alden’s unique attention to detail: the 9901 uses a unique design known as a “split welt. It is similar to a storm welt, with a protective barrier between the welt and the upper, and is characterized by stitching on the welt facing the upper. This stitching is not actually sewn onto the upper, but is merely decorative. The combination of a clean plain toe and a highly decorative buckle gives the shoe a charming impression that will never grow old.
