The charm of the Boslington model "Webb" from EYEVAN, a proudly Japanese eyewear brand.

EYEVAN, a Japanese brand popular for its fashionable eyewear, is often thought to be a new brand since its revival in 2018, but its history actually goes back 50 years. In this issue, we focus on their iconic model “Webb” and introduce the features of Webb along with the history of EYEVAN!

What is “EYEVAN,” Japan’s first “fashion eyewear brand”?

EYEVAN” was born in 1972 based on the concept of “glasses to be worn” by Kensuke Ishizu’s fashion brand “VAN JACKET”. In 1985, the brand was launched in Los Angeles by the popular eyeglass store “OLIVER PEOPLES”. In 2003, he temporarily suspended his activities, but in 2007, he opened a select store for eyeglasses, “Ivan Tokyo Midtown. He then made a full comeback in 2018 and is enjoying a resurgence in popularity. The brand has established a presence as a “fashion eyewear” brand, not just a mere eyeglasses brand, by combining unique fashion reflecting Japanese culture and world-class exquisite craftsmanship.

The close relationship between EYEVAN and Oliver Peoples

It is no exaggeration to say that there is no one who does not know the name “Oliver Peoples” as a famous eyewear brand. The brand is patronized by many celebrities and people in the Hollywood movie industry, and can be said to be a major force in the eyewear industry. In fact, Oliver Peoples and Ivan have a deep relationship. When Oliver Peoples’ Merchandise Director Kenny Schwartz saw Ivan’s items for the first time at an eyeglass exhibition in Anaheim, he felt the same inspiration for Ivan’s products as he did for the unique fashion eyewear image that he wanted to create. We felt the same inspiration. He was fascinated by the high quality and fashionable nature of the frames, which could be recognized just by holding them in his hands, and decided to ask Ivan (then known as Optic Japan Inc.) to manufacture glasses for Oliver Peoples in addition to selling Ivan products in Oliver Peoples’ stores.

In 2018, it was announced that the licensing agreement would be terminated, and the glasses produced by Ivan would no longer be sold in Japan. Oliver Peoples’ glasses were discontinued, and they attracted a great deal of attention.
