MOSCOT started out selling glasses by wheelbarrow

In 1899, the founder, Hyman Moscot, an immigrant from Eastern Europe to New York, started selling ready-to-wear eyeglasses with a pushcart on Orchard Street. Having acquired a good clientele, Hyman Moscot opened his first store at 94 Levin Street in 1915. These are the roots of Moscot. Just around this time, the Second Industrial Revolution and World War I made mass production of eyeglasses possible, and a mass market was born.

Sol Moscot, Hyman’s son, joined the family business at the age of 15 and set up the first street store in 1925; in the 1920s, Harold Lloyd, one of the three great comedy kings along with Chaplin and Buster Keaton, wore round date glasses for character building and as a corrective device for his eyesight. In the 1930s, he began developing original frames and introduced his signature model, ” Milsen,” which is still manufactured today. The name “Milsen” was derived from the name of an uncle of the Moscot family, and it is also known that Andy Warhol, a master of Pop Art, was a favorite wearer.
