What is “JOHN SMEDLEY”, a long-established British company that handles knitwear of the highest quality?
Johns Smedley was founded in 1784. The company was founded in 1784 at Lee Mills in Matlock, Derbyshire, England. In its early days, the company concentrated on cotton spinning and fabric production. The mill was established in an area with a stream from which high quality water could be extracted, making it an ideal environment for manufacturing fabrics. At the end of the 18th century, the company expanded into sockmaking and woolen textiles, and in the 19th century, John Smedley II, son of the founder, took over the brand and modernized the factory. With the philosophy that “all the processes necessary to make a complete product should be carried out in the factory, and the raw materials should be of the highest quality,” John Smedley began as a small spinning mill and developed into a knit manufacturer with an integrated production line. He was one of the first to introduce the most advanced spinning and knitting machines of the time, and began manufacturing fine gauge knitwear (high gauge knitwear). The company produced knitwear with such a fine and beautiful knit that it is said that there is no equal in England.
Although many high-gauge knitwear brands have emerged in recent years, Johns Smedley is the originator and pioneer of such brands. The company is highly trusted as a knit factory, and its factories are used by Paul Smith, Burberry, Vivienne Westwood, and Margaret Howell in the U.K., and Comme des Garçons, Brooks Brothers, and Paul Stuart outside Japan.
