Nike’s initial model “Cortez” born in 1972
The Cortez is arguably the most important sneaker in Nike’s history. Nike began when founder Phil Knight liked the quality and low price of Onitsuka Tiger in Kobe, Japan, and acquired the U.S. distribution rights in 1962. 1964, he co-founded BRS (Blue Ribbon Sports) with Bill Bowerman, a former track and field coach, and they established Onitsuka Tiger running shoes in the United States. Eventually, he became involved in product development for Onitsuka Tiger, and through Bill Bowerman’s trial and error, the ” Tiger Cortez ” was born. The lightweight, cushioned, and comfortable Tiger Cortez revolutionized the world of athletics and quickly became a signature product.
Eventually, BRS parted company with Onitsuka, and the partnership ended in 1971. The brand name was changed to Nike, and the company began manufacturing its own shoes. The “Nike Cortez,” with the Swoosh logo sewn onto the Tiger Cortez, was then released. The Onitsuka side also used the name “Cortez” named by Bowerman, which led to a legal battle, but Nike won and changed the name to “Tiger Corsair (now Asics Corsair). Nike later grew into a global sports brand with the Air Jordan and Air Max series, but the Cortez is a pair that can be called the origin of the company.
