Although no exact record remains due to disasters and other reasons, one theory as to how this mark came into being is that it was created to differentiate the jeans from others, as other brands were likely to start offering the same products with reinforced pockets after the patent for the rivet ran out in 1890. The most popular theory is that the mark was created because it was necessary to have a symbol that could be recognized as Levi’s jeans at a glance, considering that workers and other consumers are not only English-speaking people.
