Tasting the “Mobius Option” of the Ploom X! What is a craft gin that can be enjoyed as a “marriage” with heated cigarettes?

JT’s “Ploom X” heated cigarettes and “Beni Sakura Distillery,” a craft gin producer in Hokkaido, have collaborated to jointly develop two types of craft gin with original recipes. The craft gin enhances the individuality of the new Ploom X flavor, Mobius Option Series, and the distillery has sought to create a deep flavor that allows the user to enjoy a “marriage” with the aroma of the new flavor. The new flavor is currently being offered free of charge to Ploom device owners at select Ploom Shops nationwide.

Luxurious craft gin developed to enjoy the “marriage” with the new Ploom X flavor “Mobius Option

In November 2021, JT launched “Mobius Option Purple” and “Mobius Option Yellow,” JT’s first capsules of new flavors for the “Ploom X” tobacco sticks for heated tobacco devices. Purple and Yellow are equipped with berry-flavor and citrus-flavor capsules, respectively, and with the rich flavor of 100% natural menthol, these cigarette sticks have already gained high popularity in spite of their short time on the market. To commemorate the release of the Mebius Option Series, a collaboration with Beni Sakura Distillery, a craft gin producer in Hokkaido, was realized.

For this collaboration, Beni Sakura Distillery has developed a luxurious new original recipe, created exclusively for the Option Purple and Option Yellow flavors of Mobius. Based on the distillery’s flagship craft gin brand “9148” #0101, the distillery has created two new brands, “#0513 Purple Moon” and “#0216 Yellow Breeze. The sweetness of the berry flavor is enriched with true cinnamon in “#0513 Purple Moon.

The “#0513 Purple Moon” was developed for the “Mobius Option Purple,” which allows you to enjoy the sweet berry flavor by crushing the capsule inside the filter. This craft gin is made from natural Ceylon cinnamon, known as the “true cinnamon. The aroma of the gorgeous and elegant cinnamon that wafts through the air enhances the cool sensation and moistens the sweetness of the optional purple berry flavor, creating a pleasant and mellow marriage on the palate.

Soft Earl Grey blends with the tartness of citrus in “#0216 Yellow Breeze.”

Created for the “Mobius Option Yellow,” which offers a refreshing citrus aroma by crushing the filter capsule, is “#0216 Yellow Breeze. Earl Grey tea leaves, which have an ideal balance of sweetness and aroma, were selected as the raw material for this product. The soft aroma of black tea gives depth to the citrus acidity that is characteristic of Option Yellow, creating a refreshing marriage that is different from purple.

When you drink craft gin from the BENI SAKURA Distillery, you should also pay attention to the glass!

The craft gin produced at the Red Cherry Distillery is characterized by its rich and mellow aroma. You can of course enjoy the aroma in an ordinary glass, but if you use a glass with a shape that enhances the aroma, such as a brandy glass, you will be able to enjoy the flavors even more. At the press preview held in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan, an original “9148” glass was available, as shown in the image below, and when tasted in the glass, the aroma of the craft gin filled the mouth. Of course, Ploom Shop also offers craft gin in this original brandy glass. You can drink it straight, on the rocks, or with soda, however you like it!

The “Beni Sakura Distillery” is Hokkaido’s first craft gin distillery that produces only a small amount of gin and is very particular about its production process. Characterized by the use of unique ingredients unique to Hokkaido.

Established in 2018, the Red Cherry Distillery operated by Hokkaido Jiyu Whiskey is the first craft gin distillery in Hokkaido that produces a small amount of gin and is particular about its production method. Based on the concept of “a free world, free ideas, and free values,” the distillery has been highly acclaimed both in Japan and abroad for its unique gin that makes the most of the delicious flavors and aromas of Hokkaido’s unique ingredients.

The distillery’s craft gin is distilled in a 400L distiller made by Barison of Italy, using water from the underground river in Minami Ward, Sapporo City as the source water. At the preview, Mr. Hidekuni Hayashi, president of Hokkaido Free Whiskey, gave a presentation.

What are the ingredients used in the distillery’s craft gin that are unique to Hokkaido? Unexpected ingredients that go beyond the imagination!

In addition to the cinnamon and Earl Grey used in the collaboration with Ploom X, the distillery specializes in using a wide variety of ingredients. Among the wide range of ingredients, there are many local products unique to Hokkaido. For example, this is Hidaka kelp. Kelp, which has a strong impression of being used to make soup stock for cooking, can be transformed into gin in the hands of the distillery.

The #0101 of “9148”, which is one of the representative brands of the distillery, also has some unusual ingredients such as kombu and kiriboshi-daikon (dried radish)!

In addition to ingredients such as juniper berries, coriander, angelica, cinnamon, and lavender, #0101 of “9148,” a representative brand, also incorporates botanicals such as Hidaka kelp, kiriboshi-daikon, and dried shiitake mushrooms in its recipe. The gin is said to be delicious not only as a match for Japanese dishes with dashi (Japanese soup stock), but also when mixed with the dashi itself, such as in oden and nabe (hot pot). The name “9148” is a reference to the title of George Orwell’s science fiction novel “1984,” in which gin appears frequently. The label design is by Sapporo-based contemporary artist Satoshi Hata.
