Oshima Tsumugi, a traditional craft of Amami Oshima, the pride of Japan
Amami Oshima is famous for its traditional craft, Oshima tsumugi. Oshima tsumugi has a long history, dating back some 1,300 years. Oshima Tsumugi, which has the oldest tradition of dyed fabrics in Japan, is a traditional craft technique of the Oshima area and is known as a specialty product of the ” mud dyeing ” dyeing technique using indigenous natural resources and the most elaborate and precise hand weaving technique in the world. Oshima tsumugi, a highly sophisticated traditional craft that reflects the natural environment, history, and traditional culture unique to Amami and is a crystallization of the climate and craft techniques, will be exhibited at the Filmerange directly-managed store.

In addition to the display of Oshima tsumugi silk, a limited number of Phil Melange products dyed using the historic “mud dyeing” method will also be on sale at this event. This is a special lineup of products that were not available in the collection and will be available only at the event. On the first day, Friday the 23rd, a demonstration of mud dyeing by an Amami Oshima craftsman will be held at the store.
