2023 Autumn/Winter: “Layering ver 3.0” for a fresh winter look!

Dressing techniques evolve with the times. At Pitti Uomo 103, we saw many fashionable people who showed their individuality by layering clothes in every possible variation. This article describes such layering styles as “Layering Ver. 3.0” and introduces specific examples through the latest snaps.

Shirt-on-knit” layering is fresh!

Until now, knitwear has been worn over shirts. This technique dares to use knitwear as an inner layer of a shirt. The oversized shirt trend has given rise to many shirts with a generous silhouette, so knitwear of both high and middle gauges can be used as innerwear. Just add a loose-fitting overcoat and you have a stylish winter coordinate.

Shirt on knit” is also an effective way to add a touch of sophistication to a dressier look.

The layering technique described above is also effective for adding a casual, sophisticated look to the V-zone of suits and jackets. This is a technique of layering outerwear on outerwear. The technique of layering short outerwear such as shirt jackets and denim jackets over loose-fitting coats has been attracting attention for some time, but at Pitti Uomo 103, I got the impression that the flexibility of such layering has been further enhanced. Take, for example, the outfit below. A brown corduroy shirt-type outerwear and an orange hooded blouson are boldly layered with each other. This year’s casual style is a great opportunity to try layering all kinds of outerwear with outerwear with a freer conception.

Hoodie + coat + one item in the middle!

Mixing a dress coat with a hoodie is now becoming a standard winter coordinate, and is often seen not only by Pitti visitors but also on the streets of Japan. Looking back at the latest Pitti snapshots, we see men who have further updated such hooded and coated outfits and coordinated them with +1 layers. As shown in this snapshot, many of the patterns are based on items such as shirts and casual jackets inserted in between as mid-layers, adding depth to the style. Some men wore fleece jackets as mid-layers.

A style with accents added by inserting colored or patterned items in between is one of the easy-to-follow style of layered clothing. Even in monotone, if the pattern has an impact, it can be the star of a coordinated outfit. The red check introduced in the first article in this series is similar to this style, with red-checked shirts and other items layered under outerwear to add accents.

The most important feature of the ver. 3.0 layered styles seen at Pitti this time is that they are not limited to specific items or one-patterned outfits. Within the general framework of layering, it was impressive to see how each individual freely layered a variety of items to create a coordinated look. In today’s ever-diversifying world, this style of enjoying one’s own way of dressing without being bound to a single correct answer can be taken as proof that it is extremely suited to the current era.
