What is tartan check?
Tartan check is a plaid fabric woven in a twill weave using multi-colored threads, and is called “tartan” in other countries. It is a traditional Scottish fabric, and is thought to have taken root as a costume in the Highlands around the 16th and 17th centuries. The tartan check differs from other checks in that it has a variety of genres, including “district tartan,” which is considered to be the oldest, “clan tartan” for each clan, and “corporate tartan” for companies. There are also “clan tartans” for each clan and “corporate tartans” created by companies. All of these patterns are registered with the Tartan Registry in Scotland, the birthplace of tartan, and only those patterns registered with the Registry can be called tartan.
