Goodyear welted leather shoes, which have thick soles with welt and padding, are obviously “heavier” than Mackay or cemented leather shoes. At first glance, this may seem like a disadvantage, but the opposite is true. By having a moderate weight, the shoe acts like a weight on a pendulum and naturally sends the foot forward. Along with the fitting provided by the cork, this “weight” is the reason why the Goodyear welt method is said to be the most suitable for walking for a long time.

The upper and outsole are not directly sewn together because of the intervening welt. This makes it easy to remove the sole from Goodyear welted leather shoes, and when the sole is worn out, it can be repaired by replacing the entire sole with a new one. This repair, known as “all-sole replacement,” allows a pair of leather shoes to be used semi-permanently as long as the uppers are well cared for. Goodyear welt leather shoes are obviously more expensive than cemented leather shoes, but some say that the former is actually more cost-effective from a long-term perspective.
